New name to go with new pool‘Moe Indoor Recreation Centre’ will change to the ‘Moe Newborough Sports Centre’. By Latrobe City Council - 14th March 2001 - Back to News When Council’s new indoor pool opens in Newborough next Monday, the name ‘Moe Indoor Recreation Centre’ will fade into memory, as the name of the facility will change to the ‘Moe Newborough Sports Centre’.
Latrobe City Councillor, Tony Zimora, said the new name better reflected the facilities offered at the Centre with the emphasis on sport, and the facility’s geographic location.
“The facility was originally called the ‘City of Moe Indoor Recreation Centre’ and the words ‘City of’ were simply dropped off the name after the Council amalgamations. Since that time, the Centre has been known as the Moe Indoor Recreation Centre even though it includes the Joe Carmody Athletics Track and is actually located in Newborough,” Cr Zimora explained.
“What Council wanted to recognise is that the Centre predominantly serves the greater Moe-Newborough community, and we believe that the new name reflects this,” Cr Zimora said.
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins said that the timing of the new name couldn’t be better with the impending re-opening of the pool.
“The new pool has been totally rebuilt in a joint project between Latrobe City and the Victorian State Government. The work involved the construction of a new wet deck facility requiring the demolition of the existing pool walls and construction of new walls and decking; and includes the provision of disabled changeroom facilities and modifications to poolside access,” Cr Jenkins said.
“We are expecting to re-open the pool on 19 March which is very exciting. We will have a new pool, a new name, and a whole new vision. We are hoping this is just the start of the improvements to facilities at the Centre,” Cr Jenkins added.
