By East Gippsland - 3rd April 2003 - Back to News Tell us your opinion See what others have said The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has welcomed the announcement that Mallacoota and Lake Tyers will be closed to commercial fishing.
"This has been a contentious issue and an extremely long-running debate," Mr Ingram said.
"I welcome the conclusion and believe that in the long run this is the best thing for East Gippsland to have Lake Tyers and Mallacoota declared recreational-only zones.
"These two areas are the priorities clearly identified by recreational anglers, angling clubs and tourism bodies in the area.
"Victorian anglers expect to see a direct return from their recreation licence dollars, and that includes real improvements in the recreational angling The experience in Victoria.
"The future is only limited by the imagination and direction of those in charge of the anglers’ dollars.
"Fisheries management will now be a key issue to ensure that recreational anglers, both visitors and locals, gain good quality fishing on these inlets.
"I look forward to enjoying the expected recreational improvements in these areas", Mr Ingram concluded.
