Omeo business centre upgrade continuesCurrent work halfway complete By East Gippsland Shire Council - 6th January 2003 - Back to News Major renovations and expansion of East Gippsland Shire's Omeo Business Centre is continuing with the works almost at the halfway stage.
When completed - expected around late February / early March - the multi-purpose facility will greatly enhance the appearance of Day Avenue and be the first point of call for many local businesses and individuals.
"Council has allocated an extra $80,000 so the first stage of the project can be completed in its entirety," said Shire Mayor, Peter Bommer.
"The total project cost for Stage One is almost $300,000, with funding accessed via the Timber Towns Support Program and East Gippsland Shire.
"The renovation of the public meeting and adult education rooms is complete and they are ready for furnishing and use.
"Extensive verandahs and an elevated public deck will give the facility a modern, attractive style, while an access ramp will cater for the disabled public.
"At each stage of the project the Steering Committee has kept the community involved and informed through public interest meetings, along with displays of concept drawings and the opportunity of community comment," Cr Bommersaid.
The Omeo Business Centre upgrade has been a major priority of Council for over two years. In 2001, East Gippsland Shire, Tourism Victoria and Parks Victoria jointly funded and commissioned Better Places Consultants to undertake the Omeo Visitor Interpretive Pre-Feasilibity Study.
After extensive research, consultants found that this centre could not stand alone and recommended that the building be redeveloped as a multi purpose business centre incorporating a range of community, financial and local government services.
In January 2002, East Gippsland Shire commissioned Peddle Thorp Architects and Better Places Consultants and Urban Initiatives to develop a concept plan under the guidance of the Shire and a local steering committee.
Since then the Timber Towns Support Program funding has been allocated and the project is close to being delivered.
A proposal for a second stage involving the commercial development of the former library building has also been made and Council hopes this project will be next on the planning agenda at the site.
