Former Maffra Shire President Patricia Phelan, of Bushy Park, was elected unopposed at the close of nominations for the by election to fill a vacancy caused by the death of Councillor Gordon Cameron.

Mrs Phelan, who will take up her duties immediately after she’s sworn in at the next Council meeting on 20 August, met the Mayor and Councillors at the official declaration of her election at the Electoral Commission offices in Sale on Tuesday

She was elected unopposed following the withdrawal of candidate Michael Gaffy, of Main Street, Boisdale.

"We welcome Mrs Phelan to Wellington Council and congratulate her on her success," said Mayor Malcolm Hole.

"As a former Shire President and long-term resident of Maffra, Mrs Phelan will be a valuable asset to Wellington Council and a great representative for her home town."

Mayor Hole also paid tribute to Mr Gaffy’s decision to step aside to avoid the costs of a by-election.

Mr Gaffy told Councillors that he was keen to ensure that Shire ratepayers did not have to bear the costs of a by-election between two candidates.

"His withdrawal as a candidate has saved Shire ratepayers considerable outlay – an estimated $75,000 in costs for a by-election. We all have cause to be very grateful for this magnanimous gesture."
