Community Grants

Community groups invited to apply for grants

By Latrobe City Council - 1st July 2002 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council is calling for applications from community groups, for grants to be made under its 2002/2003 Community Grants Program.

The program offers three types of funding – minor capital works, community development and assistance for the conduct of events.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said there were many wonderful examples of improvements to community facilities such as clubrooms, due to funding partnerships between Council and community groups in the past.

"Council is also very keen to support groups wishing to organise major events such as festivals. We all know that these events are not only enjoyed by our own local citizens, but bring much sought after revenue to the region," Cr Jenkins said.

"Projects carried out in previous years are many and varied, and with further injections of much needed Council funding, our community groups can continue to add to the quality of our citizens," Cr Jenkins said.

"There are many fine examples of community groups working hard to create infrastructure improvements, organising events, both major and minor, as well as providing valuable community development programs within our municipality. Council encourages groups to also contribute to programs and projects by way of providing some of their own funding, as well as contributions made ‘in kind’, such as providing labour."

"Funding from this particular program comes on top of the already very generous subsidisation of facilities owned by Council, which are used by many sectors of the community. Recreation reserves, halls, parks and other facilities are made available to clubs and organisations at a cost that is often up to 90% less than the actual cost of maintaining and operating these facilities," Cr Jenkins added.

An extensive advertising campaign to promote the program is being carried out over the next few weeks, so that as many groups as possible can take advantage of these funding opportunities," Cr Jenkins concluded.

Application forms are available from Council’s Citizen Service Centres at Moe, Morwell and Traralgon, by telephoning 1300 367 700, or accessing the City’s webpage, www.latrobe.vic.gov.au
