Sale Of Land In WonthaggiBi-Lo development is underway By Carol McCormack - 2nd July 2002 - Back to News Tell us your opinion See what others have said Bass Coast Shire Council agreed last week to proceed with the sale to Wonthaggi Properties Pty Ltd of a 1020m2 piece of land in Wonthaggi. The sale is subject to terms and conditions to be agreed with the purchaser in regard to the future development of the land. The decision was made at a Council meeting held on Wednesday 26 June.
These terms and conditions relate to a proposal for a supermarket. The report regarding the supermarket development will be heard at a Council meeting on 3 July.
The 1020m2 piece of land is bounded by Watt Street to the south, Cooperative Lane to the north and existing car park to the west and property owned by Wonthaggi Properties Pty Ltd to the east.
Subject to Council approval at the 3 July Council meeting, the land will be used for a Bi-Lo supermarket development.
Nine submissions regarding the sale of land were made to Council. Many of the submissions were primarily concerned with the issue of car parking.
The submissions were all taken into account before a decision regarding the sale of land was made.
The issue of parking will also be of prime consideration when the report for the supermarket development goes before Council at the 3 July Council meeting.
"Throughout discussions with the applicant, Council has insisted that the current demand for all day unrestricted parking continues to be met," said Allan Bawden, CEO of Bass Coast Shire Council.
One of the recommendations of the report that will be heard by Council on the 3 July meeting is that the current level of unrestricted parking is maintained. This will include all day unrestricted parking underneath the supermarket as well as an area within the current car park. A cash contribution will be made to Council to build additional spaces nearby.
Another recommendation in the report is that all parking spaces must be built to Australian standards.
"Council is always willing to work with individuals and companies interested in establishing business in the Shire," said Allan.
"There has been much support from other businesses for this new development, however there have been concerns regarding traffic management," he said.
"By insisting current levels of parking are maintained, we are trying to balance the needs of existing traders with attracting new economic opportunities into the town," said Allan.
He explained that one of the recommendations of the report would be that the existing demand for all day parking on the site continued to be accommodated. The extra demand from the Bi-Lo development will be met by a combination of extra on-site parking as well as nearby parking provision. All day unrestricted parallel parking will be provided along the perimeter of Wishart Reserve. Parking in both Watt and Bailleu streets will also be modified to create more parking spaces.
