The historic rail bridge at Nowa Nowa - one of the highest of its type in Australia - will get $62,000 from the State Government's Public Heritage Program.

Welcoming the grant, the Member for Gippsand East, Craig Ingram, said the money would pay for the urgent stabilisation of the bridge so it could be an important part of the Bairnsdale to Orbost Rail Trail.

"One end is in danger of collapsing, so the work involves replacing some of the massive timbers which make up the trestles of the bridge," Mr Ingram said.

The Victorian Railways constructed the Rail Bridge over Stony Creek in 1916 on the Orbost-Bairnsdale Line east of Nowa Nowa.

It is a dramatic 27 span, 276 metre long, 18.6 metre high timber trestle bridge, supporting a single railway track over Stony Creek.

"The bridge demonstrates the ingenuity and skill involved in constructing a railway line over a long distance through difficult terrain," Mr Ingram said.

"The Bairnsdale-Orbost line opened up East Gippsland's economy, encouraging trade with urban markets, tourism and community growth by introducing a reliable means of communication in and out of the region and by providing an alternative to river and sea transportation.

"Passenger trains ceased in 1935, with goods trains operating until 1987. The bridge remains a tourist landmark," Mr Ingram concluded.

The bridge is owned by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment. It's listed on the State's Heritage Register, so any significant changes need a permit from Heritage Victoria.

The project is one of 26 to receive funding in Round 7 of the Public Heritage Program.
