All volunteers invited to celebrate this SundayMembers of voluntary organisations in Latrobe City have been invited to celebrate By Latrobe City Council - 29th November 2001 - Back to News Volunteers from all voluntary organisations in Latrobe City have been invited by Council to a celebration at Gippsland Heritage Park on Sunday to mark the finale of the International Year of Volunteers.
Featuring free admission and a free barbecue lunch, the celebration is being presented by Latrobe City as a thank-you to the thousands of Latrobe citizens who dedicate their time and energy to the community through their work as a volunteer.
"From the onset of 2001 in this special year dedicated as the International Year of Volunteers, we have recognised the enormous contribution volunteers make to this Community," Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins said.
"Council has done this through special events where we have expressed our gratitude; we have done this through publicising some of the great work done by volunteers in our mid-year edition of LINK, and also by endeavouring to thank as many of Latrobe’s volunteers as possible with Certificates of Appreciation.
"The sheer volume of volunteers nominated by volunteer organisations and citizens in this community to be recognised with volunteer certificates was staggering. In fact the Minister for Community Services, the Hon Christine Campbell, made particular comment on the matter and was so impressed that she made a special trip to Latrobe to personally present some of the certificates. More than four and a half thousand certificates of appreciation were presented here in Latrobe, yet I am quite certain there are thousands more citizens who remain unacknowledged," Cr Jenkins said.
"This celebration is our final opportunity in the International Year of Volunteers to thank these people, and also their families who perhaps miss out in some way because their mum, dad or their spouse is out helping others in the community. I urge all volunteers and their families to join us at Gippsland Heritage Park this Sunday and enjoy the free festivities and barbecue lunch.
"The International Year of Volunteers has placed the spotlight on the enormous contribution volunteers make to our society. Hopefully the recognition highlighted this year, and the enthusiasm generated within the volunteer organisations themselves to give even more of themselves for others, will continue well into the future," Cr Jenkins added.
The thank-you celebration at Gippsland Heritage Park takes place 11am-3pm on Sunday. Admission and barbecue lunch is free. Volunteers and their families are invited to turn up on the day. No RSVP is required. Further information from Wendy Hansen at Latrobe City Council, telephone 1300 367 700.
