Seal Of Approval Given To Burnets Road Special Charge SchemeLatrobe City Council approved the commencement of a process to declare a Special Charge Scheme to seal part of Burnets Road, Traralgon East, at Monday night’s council meeting. By Latrobe City Council - 11th September 2009 - Back to News The proposed sealed section would commence at the intersection of the Traralgon – Maffra Road, for a distance of 1.2 kilometres.
Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said Burnets Road is the first road being considered for sealing under new policy arrangements adopted by Latrobe City last year.
"The new policy provides an opportunity for residents living on unsealed roads in rural areas to apply to council to consider the possibility of sealing their road," Cr Price explained.
"Under the policy, residents are currently required to contribute a fixed maximum amount of $5000 per rateable property. This amount will be reviewed annually in accordance with CPI movements.
"Council has provided $500,000 in the 2009 -10 capital works program for the sealing of rural roads. A requirement of the policy is that a majority of property owners must agree to contribute to the cost of the works before council will consider the request," Cr Price explained.
"The estimated cost to seal Burnets Road is $393,000 and it is estimated that the Burnet Road property owners will contribute a total of $55,000 towards the cost of the works.
"If more than one request is received at any given time, the policy provides an assessment framework to determine priorities. Residents are advised that the whole process is subject to the availability of council funds and that at least twelve months are required for the planning process to consider requests.
"A majority of residents in Burnets Road have previously indicated to council their willingness to contribute to the cost of the sealing work. The initial consultation process has now been completed; and the decision on Monday commences the formal consultation process under the Local Government Act 1989 for the preparation of a Special Charge Scheme."
