Players Join Forces To Tackle Holiday ProblemsKey players in the holiday accommodation market met last with Bass Coast Shire Council. By Bass Coast - 12th October 2010 - Back to News . Local real estate agents, holiday accommodation providers and Council officers discussed measures to tackle noise and over-crowding problems that intensify over the holiday period.
Council’s Community and Economic Development Director, Patti Wenn, said the meeting was a productive way of identifying strategies to help curb anti-social behaviour.
"There is a real concern in the community about over-crowding, noise and general anti-social behaviour at some properties on Phillip Island," said Ms Wenn.
"This is obviously amplified over holiday periods when the population on the Island swells.
"Members of the holiday accommodation market recognise they have a role to play in reducing the problem.
"Agencies in attendance spoke of procedures they have in place to manage properties on behalf of their clients.
"This included vetting of prospective tenants; having stringent terms and conditions for holiday rental; meeting tenants on arrival at the property to personally outline these terms and conditions and ensure they are understood; and regular monitoring of properties as well as cleaning and maintenance," continued Ms Wenn
Creating a culture of respect by tenants, property owners and agents was identified as a key outcome of the meeting.
"Anti-social behaviour is a much bigger problem than Phillip Island and Bass Coast," said Ms Wenn.
"The group has also suggested that property owners who privately lease their properties need to have procedures in place to address any tenant problems as they arise.
"Strategies identified by the group include providing phone numbers and business cards to neighbours of holiday properties; contacting holiday home owners who lease their properties privately to inform them of their responsibilities; and recommending that Council introduce a registration process for holiday properties.
"The group will meet on a regular basis to review the strategies, how they can be implemented and who by," said Ms Wenn.
