Phillip Island Library funding boostRedevelopment of the library for more and better community use. By news@gippsland - 21st April 2021 - Back to News The Phillip Island Library, which will be incorporated into the new Cowes Cultural and Community Centre, will benefit from an $800,000 grant from the State Government’s Living Libraries Infrastructure Program.

Bass Coast Shire Council Mayor Cr Brett Tessari welcomed the news of this funding, thanking Minister for Local Government Shaun Leane and Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale for their support of the Cultural Centre project. "The continued support from the Victorian Government of the Cowes Cultural and Community Centre and further investment in a new Phillip Island Library is great news for residents and visitors,"
"Libraries plays such an important role within our community and the old Phillip Island Library is unable to keep up with demand, so we look forward to delivering a new modern library that has more space for collections, services and programs," Cr Tessari said.
New spaces and various uses of the library
The new library will incorporate a reception, administration offices, children’s area with play zone, young adults’ area, group breakout, quiet booths, lounge and public computers with access to printing. "This funding will allow users to comfortably explore, relax, browse, learn, discover, borrow or participate in various activities," Cr Tessari said.
More opportunities for regular programs
Managed by West Gippsland Libraries, the Phillip Island Library receives over 60,000 visits per year, with the new library space expected to welcome 80,000 to 100,000 visitors each year. West Gippsland Libraries CEO Leanne Williams, was excited by the investment from the State Government.
"This redevelopment provides many opportunities; the increased space will enable us to facilitate regular programmed sessions such as Baby Rhyme Time, Story Time, Book clubs, FutureLab, School Holiday programming, and author talks," Ms Williams said. The new Cowes Cultural and Community Centre is expected to open towards the end of 2022.
