Celebrating The Year Of Chinese Culture In Australia

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is proud to present the work of acclaimed Chinese artist Li Gang.

By Latrobe City - 4th October 2011 - Back to News

The exhibition, Li Gang: in the grey scale, has been curated by the Australian artist Tony Trembath, and surveys the recent photographic work of this Australian-trained Chinese artist. Li Gang is a graduate of Victorian College of the Arts. Since returning to Beijing in the late 1990s, he has maintained a diverse practice, which includes painting, sculpture and photography.

Latrobe City’s arts director, Julie Adams, said that visitors to the gallery would experience a remarkable poetic sensitivity in Li Gang’s photographic works.

"Using hand-built cameras Li Gang produces large and complex images of contemporary East Asian urban spaces including Beijing and Seoul. His images of people moving around in these larges cities are quite mesmerising. The use of hand-built cameras introduces risk and accidents to Li Gang’s work. In his photographs, instead of control and mastery, there is magic and mystery.

"The exhibition also contains examples of Li Gang’s extraordinary hand-made cameras that are essential to his working process. They are in themselves like sculptures," Ms Adams said.

The exhibition continues at the Latrobe Regional Gallery until 16 October.
