Latrobe City’s manager information services, Phillip Harris, said the internet service is aimed at helping small or home-based businesses and will help determine what council permits, licences and registrations may be required when undertaking a range of activities such as opening a new business, building an extension to an existing business or promoting a business.

"Users can complete the relevant permit, licence or registration application form by typing in the required information into the form, (saving the form at any time on their computer) then printing, faxing or mailing to council," Mr Harris explained.

Mr Harris said that in the future, Latrobe City Council will also provide small and home-based businesses with the ability to apply for the permit, licence or registration via the Internet. "This will include completing the application form, providing any required supporting documentation and making any necessary payment.

"The aim is to make the business of doing business faster and simpler in Latrobe City by providing simple to use and easy to access internet based services that can be used 24/7."

To start using Latrobe City Council online services go to www.latrobecity.vic.gov.au access the relevant subject area and look for ‘step-by-step guide help’ and/or ‘application form’ links.

"Initially Latrobe City Council will provide these services for businesses in the food and health related areas. The service will facilitate registering a business with council, transferring the registration, obtaining approval redevelopment plans, and running a temporary food stall," Mr Harris said.

"The service will also provide details on planning permits and a range of local council permits including placing items on a footpath for promotional purposes, and animal registrations."

Mr Harris said that businesses can now access www.latrobecity.vic.gov.au and within a short while have determined whether or not they should be applying for a specific permit, licence or registration and have completed the application form.

"The online service will complement existing services provided by council. Before speaking with council regarding specific needs, businesses can use the online guides to understand what they may need to comply with in order to be granted a council permit, licence or registration," Mr Harris added.

Funding to develop the services was provided through the federal government’s AusIndustry initiative aimed at cutting the cost of doing business by lessening the red tape burden for businesses in Australia.
