Safe Cycling in built up areasWellington Council is supporting pedal power By Wellington Shire Council - 7th June 2002 - Back to News Bicycle paths have been road marked and signed across Sale to make sure the city streets provide plenty of opportunity for safe cycling.
"Hundreds of children cycle to and from school each day, dozens of adults use pedal power to keep fit, while others just use a bicycle as a handy means of transport," said Wellington Mayor Malcolm Hole.
"We need to make sure that we provide cycle pathways in built up areas wherever possible and encourage everyone to follow the road rules to keep them safe and sound."
The paths road marked and signed include:
- Reeve Street between Foster and Raglan Street
- Raglan Street, Reeve Street to Somerton Park Road, and
- Montgomery Street, Guthridge Parade to Somerton Park Road.
Off road bicycle paths re-marking and signage has also been carried out at
- Guthridge Parade, Dawson Street to Stevenson Park.
These areas will include a number of shared zones (vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles).
"These sections are not currently signed as shared zones and it is important that everyone understands their responsibility in these areas," said the Mayor.
"In these zones vehicles must give way to pedestrians. However, pedestrians should remember not to overly hinder the passage of vehicles.
"In all cases, the shared zones provide access to car parking spaces at the shops, hospital, bowling club and swimming pool, so in these areas everybody needs to take care and be aware."
