Bass Coast CFA Acting Operations Officer, Paul Summons, said the decision to end fire restrictions was made following a review of weather, rainfall figures, grass growth, and the dryness of the grass and bushes in the area.

"While the CFA’s seasonal restriction on lighting fires in the open has been lifted, restrictions still apply under Council by-laws," Mr Summons explained.

Bass Coast Shire Council Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, said the CFA and Council had worked together to develop guidelines to help people understand where and when they can burn off.

"Whilst open air and inceinerator fires aren’t permitted in residential areas at anytime, different circumstances do apply for rural properties," Cr Rothfield said.

"The guidelines apply for any open air burning off you may want to do and aim to protect the safety and comfort of all residents and visitors.

"They include important information, such as who to notify about the burn and how much notice needs to be given. For example, notice to adjoinging landowners or occupiers must be given 24-hours before the burn."

To ensure the fire services are aware of your planned burn, please give the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) two-hours prior notification by calling 1800 668 511l.

If the area to be burnt is next to a residential area, Council’s Local Laws Team must be notified too by calling 1300 BCOAST (226 278) or (03) 5671 2211, two-hours prior to light up.

Both the Mayor and Mr Summons stressed that although the fire danger period is ending soon, it is important for the community take extreme care when burning off on rural land.

Council’s Burning Off Guidelines are available at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au/burningoff or by contacting Council on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) or (03) 5671 2211.
