Call before you cut!

Wellington Shire Council is urging any residents looking to remove native vegetation from their property to check first with the council as a permit may be required.

By Wellington Shire Council - 23rd March 2004 - Back to News

The council is making the call as part of its ongoing commitment to protect and preserve the shire’s natural environment, with the illegal removal of native vegetation causing potential damage to our eco-system.

Residents considering vegetation removal should contact Wellington’s Environmental Planner in the first instance on 1300 366 244.

Failure to obtain a permit, where it is required could result in prosecution and a hefty fine.

Native vegetation includes all plants that are indigenous to Victoria (species that occurred naturally within the state before European settlement), including trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses.

The council is also anxious to hear from anyone who suspects that native vegetation is being illegally removed and will treat any information received in confidence.

Said Wellington’s Mayor John Jago: "We would advise anybody looking to remove native vegetation to contact the council as a matter of course and do their bit to help preserve our very important natural environment.

"Our native trees, shrubs, and grasses play a vital role in preventing salinity, erosion and water quality decline in the Shire, and provides natural habitats to our popular native animals including koalas, possums and echidnas."

For further information about Wellington Shire Council’s native vegetation and environmental programs and about any permit that may be required, please contact Colleen Murphy, Environmental Planner on 1300 366 244 or visit www.wellington.vic.gov.au. Information sheets are all also available from the website or from any council service centre.
