Latrobe Valley Race Day Delivered

The Baillieu Government is delivering on its commitment to deliver a major race date to the Latrobe Valley.

By Russell Northe - 16th March 2011 - Back to News

The Member for Morwell Russell Northe said racing control body Racing Victoria Limited has confirmed there will be a race meeting at the Latrobe Valley Racing Club (LVRC) in Traralgon on Caulfield Cup day in October.

"The Coalition promised the racing club and the wider Latrobe Valley community it would put in place a race meeting on Caulfield Cup day and now it has delivered on that promise," Mr Northe said.

"This will be a wonderful event not just for the local racing industry, but also the wider community who I am sure will be well catered for at the racecourse.

"The LVRC will now have three race day meetings annually which follows its successful holding of two meetings a year.

"The LVRC, being in Traralgon, is connected to one of the fastest growing communities in the State. This additional race day will give greater opportunity for the burgeoning community to attend and enjoy the races."

Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester also congratulated the racing club committee and sponsors of the club.

"All credit must go to the countless volunteers who have dedicated their time to keep Traralgon Racing Club viable and ensure it plays an important role in the social and economic future of the region," Mr Chester said.

"Several years ago the club faced an uncertain future but the community rallied together and this additional race meeting is testament to what a determined community can achieve when it works together."

Minister for Racing Denis Napthine paid tribute to the Latrobe Valley Racing Club including Chairman Brian Quigley and Club Manager Brendan Blackshaw for their fierce lobbying to have this race day come about.

"I look forward to working with local Member Russell Northe and members of the Latrobe Valley racing industry to ensure the Club’s ongoing success.

"The previous Labor Government had a track record of scrapping race meetings, particularly in rural and regional Victoria.

"In stark contrast, the Baillieu Government will help to reverse these cuts.

"The racing industry is a major contributor to rural and regional Victoria’s economy and employs tens of thousands of country Victorians. The industry must be supported so that it can grow and contribute to the wider community."
