Media Release

Latrobe City Council has welcomed the announcement that Brindabella Airlines intends to commence a daily passenger air service from Latrobe Regional Airport to Albury and Canberra early next year.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 3rd December 2004 - Back to News

Brindabella Airlines Chief Executive Officer, Jeff Boyd, has confirmed that the company is proposing to introduce a new service from late February 2005, which will depart Latrobe Regional Airport each morning at 6.30am, reaching Canberra at 8am and returning each evening at 7.30pm.

Latrobe Regional Airport General Manager, Andrew Stephens, explained that the Latrobe service will be an extension of the new service that Brindabella Airlines has recently commenced in Albury.

"Domestic travel from Latrobe City will be greatly improved as the Latrobe service will enable connections through Albury and Canberra to a wide variety of destinations in Australia. Brindabella Airlines also currently operates a popular direct service from Canberra to Newcastle, providing three departures daily," Mr Stephens said.

"It is intended that the Latrobe service will operate with 18-seat ‘Metroliner’ aircraft, which are fast, pressurised aircraft ideal for the Canberra–Albury–Latrobe service. In addition, Brindabella Airlines is an affiliate of QANTAS, enabling passengers from Latrobe to book through QANTAS and enjoy the benefits of QANTAS frequent flyer points," Mr Stephens added.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, has welcomed the announcement and congratulated the Latrobe Regional Airport Board for its work over the past twelve months in securing the new service.

"There was widespread disappointment when REX Airlines ceased its service in mid-2003 after a trial period of only six months, however Council is confident that a viable business opportunity exists for the right operator on the Latrobe-Canberra-Sydney route," Cr White said.

"I am delighted that Brindabella Airlines has recognised the opportunity for a new aircraft service here in Latrobe City and I thank Jeff Boyd for working with the Latrobe Regional Airport Board to develop the new service proposal.

"Brindabella Airlines has also indicated that additional services may be possible at a later date if the inaugural service proves successful, however this will depend on the patronage of the service by the wider Gippsland community. The Latrobe Regional Airport Board and Brindabella Airlines have a number of matters to finalise before the service commences, and a commencement date and timetable for the inaugural service will be scheduled in the near future," Cr White added.
