Freight Network Buyback A Lesson In Privatisation Failure: Ingram

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has welcomed moves for the State Government to buy back the state’s country rail freight network.

"Finally the time has come where both sides of politics agree that the privatisation of essential public infrastructure is a failure," Mr Ingram said.

"For eight years, taxpayers have been paying access charges to these lines and the network has become dilapidated. It should not have been sold to begin with."

Mr Ingram said this had been another lesson in the dangers of privatising essential public infrastructure.

"There are similar issues in our privatised electricity and gas networks, and Telstra," Mr Ingram concluded.
