Latrobe City’s coordinator performing arts & venues, Kathleen Roberts explained the concept of the exhibition.

"The exhibition showcases works by students from Prep to grade 6 in a variety of mediums including painting, drawing and collage.

"The artworks focus on a range of themes and activities that were designed to help the children learn and explore their artistic abilities using shapes, numbers, textures, colours, patterns and techniques.

"For example, one of the exhibited lessons - Monkeying Around - focused on shapes and shapes within shapes. The children studied everyday geometric shapes and the way in which they can be put together to form realistic images.

"Building upon this, students were then introduced to new methods of blending and sketching whilst focussing on the main concept of shapes within shapes during their drawing lesson," explained Ms Roberts.

"The Latrobe Performing Arts Centre Education Exhibition Space has been operating an Education Exhibition program for three years now. This is the first time that we have held an opening for an exhibition, which I believe will bring the artists their families, friends and educators together to celebrate their art," Ms Roberts said.

South St Primary School Art teacher, Ms Alison Luxford, explained the importance of art in schools and the benefits that students can gain by being exhibited.

"The aim of creating a piece of art work is to instil a sense of confidence within the student. The students gain a great deal of satisfaction when they complete their work. To have the students work publicly on display reinforces this confidence. Exhibiting their work promotes student achievement and this is what we’re all about at South Street Primary.

"The fact that the students have the opportunity to have their work exhibited in the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre Education Exhibition space is fantastic," Ms Luxford said.

"Latrobe City invites primary and secondary schools to contact us to book in an exhibition. It is a fantastic program that we would love to offer to other schools in Latrobe City," concluded Ms Roberts.

Latrobe Performing Arts - South St Primary School, is currently being exhibited at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre, Monday – Friday 10am -5pm, until 14 June

South St Primary School will also hold an exhibition of these works on their school grounds in November.
