$500,000 To Restore Wonthaggi Railway Station

Bass Coast Shire Council today received a $500,000 grant to restore the historic Wonthaggi Railway Station.

Council made the funding application to the Regional Infrastructure Development Fund. The Hon John Brumby, Minister for State and Regional Development, today announced that Council’s application was successful.

Cr John Gains, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council, said he was delighted with the funding announcement, as it will allow Council to preserve and maintain an important cultural and heritage asset.

"This building is an important part of Wonthaggi’s history as a mining town," said Cr Gains.

Cr Gains said the historic building will be restored to its former glory and the Visitor Information Centre will be relocated to the Station.

"This will make the Information Centre more prominent and move it closer to the business area of Wonthaggi," he said.

The Wonthaggi Railway Station redevelopment is stage one of the Wonthaggi Coal Heritage Project. The Project links and develops the historical coal-mining buildings and sites in Wonthaggi such as the State Coal Mine. A business plan was prepared for the Project earlier in 2002. The plan was developed by a range of stakeholders including: Wonthaggi Arts Group, Wonthaggi Genealogy Society, Wonthaggi Historical Society, Heritage Victoria, Parks Victoria, Department of Infrastructure and Bass Coast Shire Council.

The Wonthaggi Genealogy Society and the Historical Society, who currently occupy the Station building, will continue to work with Council on the project.

It is expected that work will begin on restoring the Wonthaggi Railway Station in mid 2003.
