DPI Appoints New Dairy Extension Program Manager

Dairy extension services are growing and developing in Victoria and some new program arrangements are being implemented to ensure continued high impact.

By Department of Primary Industries - 10th October 2005 - Back to News

As part of these new arrangements, Ms Penny Shaw has been appointed by the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) as the new manager of its dairy extension program in Victoria.

Ms Shaw has worked in the dairy extension team since 1998 as the project manager for Northern Victoria and is based in Echuca.

Ms Shaw said, "The DPI dairy extension program in Victoria consists of an extensive range of services including training courses, support groups, newsletters, forums and conferences. These services are delivered through projects such as Target 10, Dairy Moving Forward, and water and nutrient management projects".

"DPI works in collaboration with the dairy industry, government and catchment management authorities helping farmers to balance productivity, environment and lifestyle", said Ms Shaw.

Ms Shaw is from a farming background, and grew up on a dairy and broiler chicken farm in southern Victoria. She studied agricultural science and agricultural economics and has enjoyed 15 years with the Department involved in farm management economics, salinity management, irrigation management and the dairy industry.

Ms Shaw said, "Whilst there is a bright future for the dairy industry in Victoria there will still be challenges".

"Victoria has the biggest and best dairy extension group anywhere in the world as a result of a long history of developing and delivering programs in collaboration with the industry", said Ms Shaw.

"The implementation of a new Victorian Dairy Extension Centre will bring the governance of dairy extension services under a single network of regional and state advisory committees, offering more opportunities for the dairy industry and government to work together", she said.

Ms Shaw said, "DPI will play a major role in the development and delivery of programs and she is looking forward to continuing an innovative and successful relationship with the dairy industry".

Ms Shaw’s predecessor as DPI Dairy Project Manager, John Boomsma, retired from the Department in May 2005.

"However, John will continue his involvement with the dairy industry by assisting with the set up of the new arrangements to manage dairy extension over the next ten years", said Ms Shaw.
