Reed removal at Kernot Lake to start in April

Latrobe City Council has begun removing reeds from Kernot Lake to beautify the area and to restore the water levels to allow for the fountain to be recommissioned.

By Portal Admin - 6th April 2017 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said the dry weather recently meant the area was still hard enough for heavy machinery access.

"The scope of works includes removing all reeds from the lake on the western side of the footbridge, raising the water level by 250mm by doing some modification works on the weir outlet, returning the fountain to operational condition and landscaping works on the southern side of the lake. The reeds will be dried behind Kernot Hall then removed for disposal.

"These works will certainly go a long way towards restoring the amenity of the lake. It is a beautiful setting and with visitors to Kernot Hall, Immigration Park and the Fed Training complex, projects like this are so important for community pride," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"Notices have been placed at the lake to advise that works are being undertaken.

Clearly, there will be some disruption during the works, but the end result will be a functional fountain, a cleaner, healthier lake and an enchanting place to visit," Cr O’Callaghan concluded.
