Kilcunda Planting On Track Kilcunda Planting On Track Tree loving volunteers were out to lend a hand at the Kilcunda tree planting day on Saturday, 30 July. By Bass Coast - 9th August 2011 - Back to News Around 3,000 indigenous plants were carefully distributed in the foreshore just west of the Kilcunda Trestle Bridge and near Cemetery Beach, thanks to the efforts of Bass Coast Shire Council, Three Creeks Landcare, Coastcare and dozens of volunteers
Bass Coast Shire Council’s Planning and Environment Director, Hannah Duncan-Jones, said: "it was a wonderful group effort and all were rewarded for their hard work with seeing the new vegetation spread throughout the landscape."
The new vegetation will provide habitats for a range of animals including the Golden Headed Cisticolla and White Fronted Chat and marsupials such as the White Footed Dunnart and the Southern Brown Bandicoot. When planning the re-vegetation care was taken to match the flora with the surrounding local environment. Ms Duncan-Jones explained that is takes months of preparation to get this positive end result.
"This area needed replanting because erosion that had resulted in a large clay pan in the surrounding vegetation," said Ms Duncan-Jones. "The land form had changed over time after removal of the former railway station next to the Trestle Bridge. "The plants would struggle to grow in clay and rock, so Council brought in truck loads of sandy soil. Mulch has also been spread on top of this soil to prevent the establishment of weeds."
The Kilcunda planting was one of the eight community planting days held by Three Creeks Landcare over the season between late June and mid September each year. During this time the group will plant around 20,000 plants.
