Government¡¦s Elite Athlete Travel Grants Program.

Mr Northe welcomed the funding boost for five athletes in the Morwell electorate.

Local recipients of the grants are:

„h Samantha Crawford, 2013 National Archery Championships, Canberra, ACT.

„h Robert Preston, Australian Orienteering Championships, ACT, Australia.

„h Steven Gray, 2013 World Eight Ball Championships, Blackpool ¡V England.

„h Jake Gibson, Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games 2013, Newcastle, NSW.

„h Andrew Crozier, World Half Ironman Championships in Las Vegas, Lake Las Vegas, USA.

Mr Northe said the latest round of funding for the program, part of a 2010 election commitment worth $2 million, would support elite athletes as they prepared for major competitions such as the 2014 Commonwealth Games and Winter Olympics.

¡§The costs associated with travelling to compete at major national and international events can be a significant burden to Victoria¡¦s elite athletes,¡¨ Mr Northe said.

¡§These grants of up to $2000 go a long way to removing some of the obstacles our top athletes face, making it easier for them to focus on their sporting careers as they strive to take on the world.

"Since January 2012 the Elite Athlete Travel Grants Program has provided over $1.26 million to assist with the travel costs of 840 Victorian elite athletes,¡¨ Mr Northe said.

Grant recipients must be recognised by their State Sporting Association as a representative of Victoria or Australia or be eligible to compete at the highest level nationally or internationally. The current round will distribute funds to a total of 57 different sports.

¡§This program is giving our local elite athletes the support they need to reach their full potential and realise their dreams of sporting success,¡¨ Mr Northe said.

¡§This boost will help with the cost of travelling to and from elite sporting events.

¡§I look forward to cheering on our elite athletes as they compete in major events across Australia and around the world,¡¨ he said.
