Funding for Inverloch Neighbourhood House

Bass Coast Shire Council recently received a grant of $138,000 for the Inverloch Neighbourhood House Community Hub project.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 10th July 2006 - Back to News

The money was allocated under the Department of Victorian Communities (DVC) Building Strong Communities Grants Package – Modernising Neighbourhood House Program.

Bass Coast Shire CEO, Allan Bawden welcomed the announcement of the funding.

"This is the first component of a project to relocate the Inverloch Neighbourhood House and upgrade the library," said Mr Bawden.

"The ultimate aim is to create a ‘learning hub’ at the Inverloch Community Centre."

Mr Bawden confirmed that the creation of the "learning hub" requires alterations and additions to the current community centre building and library. Funding for this part of the project is being sought through a DVC Community Support Fund/Living Libraries grant.

"Council has worked closely with the community and various government departments to develop this project," said Mr Bawden.

"We are now awaiting advice from the Community Support Fund on the success of the remaining grant, to give the project the go ahead."

It is planned that if both submissions are successful, the next step will be to put the draft concept plans for the "learning hub" on display at the Inverloch Community Centre and call for public comment.

There is already documented evidence of strong community support for the establishment of such a facility. A study undertaken in December 2005 showed that many people felt that the current community centre was underutilised. There was also considerable community and local business interest, support and demand for programs that could be offered by the Inverloch Neighbourhood House. Unfortunately due to the current location, the House was restricted in the amount and breadth of programs on offer. It is envisaged that the establishment of the new "learning hub" will address both these issues.
