At its September Ordinary Council Meeting, Bass Coast Shire Council adopted Amendment C147. The Amendment will provide consistent framework on the contributions to public space for subdivisions of three or more lots throughout the municipality.

The Amendment introduces a five per cent open space contribution into the Bass Coast Planning Scheme. Outlining this mandatory requirement in the Amendment provides certainty for the community and for Council.

The Amendment also provides clearer direction to ensure open space contributions are used to improve the quality of public open space.

Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, explained that the Amendment will reflect the increasing demand new development is placing on the public open spaces.

"As we grow and develop, it is imperative that we have our Planning Schemes and strategies aligned with how we want the future of Bass Coast to look and feel," Cr Rothfield said.

"During our Council Plan engagement it was clear that the community are passionate about maintaining our character, charm and open environment."

"The Amendment addresses the outcomes of the Council Plan to ensure we maintain our character and the uniqueness of our townships by safeguarding a commitment from developers to contribute to our public open space."

The adoption of the Amendment was a recommended action of the Bass Coast Open Space Plan and Review 2016, which was adopted by Council on 17 August 2016.

The Amendment received one objection during its one month exhibition period in February/March 2017. After considering these objections, Council voted unanimously to adopt the Amendment. The Amendment will now be sent to the Minister for Planning for approval.
