City sponsorship to help basketballers achieve goalsLatrobe City Council announced a dual sponsorship arrangement at Latrobe City Pacers first home game on Saturday night at the Moe Newborough Sports Centre. By Latrobe City Council - 16th March 2004 - Back to News The announcement sees the City take on major sponsorship of both the Latrobe City Pacers and the Latrobe City Energy basketball clubs.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said the sponsorship commitment confirmed Latrobe City’s role in assisting the elite basketball teams in the City as they strive for success on the court this season
"We were very keen to help these clubs develop, so that they not only have the very best opportunity for success on the court in terms of representing Latrobe City, but also in terms of the development of the sport in general and in particular the younger players," Cr Middlemiss said.
The Latrobe City Pacers compete in the Australian Basketball Association while Latrobe City Energy is a recently established association comprising members from all local associations which will be competing in mens, womens and under-age divisions of the Victorian Basketball League.
"These two organisations have been very proactive in establishing a structure that will enhance the sport within our City. Not only have they realised a long-held objective of getting all the local associations to work together, but they are also working closely to ensure that there are clear paths for Latrobe’s elite young basketballers to follow," Cr Middlemiss said.
"We are delighted to be involved in sponsorship, and are thrilled for the teams to be playing under our name and in our colours. When these teams compete, they will be competing on behalf of the City. Their players will come from communities throughout our City, as will their spectators and supporters. It is a very positive move to have people unified to achieve a common goal and we will always support such initiative.
"There is no doubt that basketball is a very popular sport, particularly amongst young people, and this is one of the key reasons why Council was determined to support the sport. Council operates either directly or indirectly, four indoor stadiums, and we know that the sport is extremely popular.
"We are also about to construct a new stadium facility at Traralgon which will also greatly benefit the sport," Cr Middlemiss added.
"It is just great to see people playing and barracking for a team called ‘Latrobe City’. We hope that this will be the first of other similar sponsorship arrangements in the future," Cr Middlemiss concluded.
