Cowes Recycling Bank OpensThe Cowes Public Place Recycling Bank is now open for residents to drop off domestic recyclables. By Bass Coast - 13th June 2013 - Back to News The free service has been set up at Council’s Cowes Depot on Dunsmore Road and will be open to residents and visitors between 10.30am and 3.30pm from Friday through to Monday.
Council’s Infrastructure Director, Felicity Sist, said the bank was a step forward for Council.
"The Cowes Recycling Bank will help fill the void for household recycling left by the closure of Rhyll Transfer Station. It will also help us increase the amount of waste that gets recycled each year, and reduce the waste to landfill," Ms Sist said.
Ms Sist said meeting these goals are not only the responsibility of Council, but also the community and encouraged everyone to get involved.
"The main message we want to get through to the community is that the whole community has a role to play in waste management," Ms Sist said.
"The Recycling Bank will provide a free, easy to use service for the local community to dispose of their recyclable items."
The opening of the Bank is the perfect time to consider what you put in your own recycle bin. Up to 28 per cent of Bass Coast residents’ recycle bins are found to include non-recyclable items, which means that the whole batch cannot be recycled and is rejected upon arriving at Wonthaggi. This is a startling number compared to the state average of eight per cent. If you would like advice on how to reduce your own household waste, Council’s Waste Education Officer is available to help.
In anticipation of the Rhyll Transfer Station closure, a Kerbside Green Waste trial will also run as an alternative service for northern Phillip Island residents. Over 400 residents have already signed up for the trial and expressed great enthusiasm for the new initiative.
