Wellington Shire Council has warmly welcomed the Victorian Government’s 2004 Economic Statement released yesterday titled Victoria: Leading the Way which is set to provide substantial benefit to local industry and economy.

The Economic Statement - that sets out to attract $10 billion of new investment and generate around 20,000 new jobs in Victoria - contains19 action programs designed to promote investment and exports, and cut business costs.

Plans for land tax reductions and support for enterprise and exporting outlined in the statement will provide some very welcome relief to Wellington farmers and businesses who have experienced hardships over the past 12 months including the impact of the drought, a severe lack of water, the rising Australian dollar and the high cost of fodder.

Said Wellington Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "Wellington is a key agricultural player in Victoria and one of the highest producing dairying areas in the nation, relying heavily on exporting. The Opening Doors to Export Plan, and the proposed improvements to the Port of Melbourne and Melbourne wholesale markets will be vital to the ongoing sustainability of Wellington’s food production industry."

"This region will also benefit from the government’s recent proposals included in the Next Generation Food Strategy which will provide strong support opportunities for this key food producing region."

"Another welcome program in the package is the continuation of Make it Happen in Provincial Victoria which promotes economic investment and lifestyle opportunities to those relocating from Melbourne to regional areas throughout the state. "

"The council has been a strong advocate for the promotion of cultural tourism, and is also pleased to see the government has provided funds to increase patronage of cultural and heritage attractions across the Victoria."

"Overall the impact of the package will be extremely positive for Victoria, particularly for businesses within Gippsland and Wellington which stand to benefit across a number of

areas. Wellington Shire Council will continue to pursue opportunities to advance the area and take advantage of new initiatives available through the State Government."
