Road funding welcomed by Latrobe$5.41 million to improve Latrobe City's roads. By Latrobe City Council - 6th December 2000 - Back to News Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning has welcomed the Federal Government’s $1.2billion local roads funding announcement, saying that Latrobe City’s $5.41million share would do much to improve the quality and safety of the region’s roads.
Cr Hanning said that while Council was yet to consider exactly what projects would be funded with the $5.41million, the announcement reflected the hard work put in by Council in lobbying Federal Government over Latrobe’s needs.
“Latrobe has received a fair and equitable share, which shows that the Federal Government was listening when we made our submission to Canberra,” Cr Hanning said.
“With these additional funds, our program of road resealing and road rehabilitation already the subject of Latrobe City Council’s budget will be able to be extended,” Cr Hanning said.
“In addition there are a number of initiatives being discussed that could benefit from additional funding.
“For example, the short and longer term needs in relation to replacing ageing timber bridges with concrete structures is currently being assessed.
“Council officers are also currently preparing a report on sealing collector roads, and similarly, we are examining options to seal the first fifty metres of unsealed roads where they bisect existing sealed roads.
“Priorities however, will be determined when Council has evaluated the full extent of the extra Federal funding in conjunction with its present budget and commitments.”
Councillor Hanning added that it was pleasing to note that other regions of the State which were in dire need of additional road funding, had also received good allocations.
“East Gippsland, Wellington, Baw Baw and South Gippsland have all been treated well. Perhaps it is recognition that in the past, Gippsland has been neglected by governments in Canberra,” Cr Hanning said.
“Our only apprehension is that this funding does not address the concerns of rural motorists paying excessive prices for petrol and diesel. Rising fuel costs remain a separate issue, one which the Federal Government still has to tackle.
“It is clear that rural motorists will still demand that the government forego any additional fuel excise windfall when indexation is due in February. Better and safer roads are obviously good for Latrobe and all regional and rural communities; but for many people the cost of driving on those roads because of high fuel prices, has become unaffordable,” Cr Hanning concluded.
