Council Report Outlines University Merger ActivitiesIn response to the University of Ballarat and Monash University decision to proceed with a proposal to create an expanded, regionally-focused university, Latrobe City Council has reviewed its activities undertaken to date. By Latrobe City - 7th June 2013 - Back to News Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Sandy Kam, said that the Council report noted previous resolutions, as well as submissions from a range of stakeholders about the proposed change.
"Since the announcement about the proposed merger in February, Council has made significant efforts to ensure that we remain informed and so that we can properly represent our community during the process.
"We have met with senior representatives of both universities, as well as state and federal government representatives to discuss our concerns about the proposal, including the lack of information provided to the staff and students at the Churchill Campus and the wider community," Cr Kam said.
"We would encourage Monash and Ballarat universities to continue talking to us and to the community. This will ensure that the new university at Churchill will reflect local aspirations and best appeal to the broader community," Cr Kam said.
Council has resolved to acknowledge that the proposal has been supported by both Monash University and University of Ballarat and is likely to proceed, and that the mayor writes to the universities to seek an opportunity to be engaged in the development of the proposal.
"This Council resolution reflects our strong wish to move forward and I will be writing to both universities this week to seek an opportunity to be engaged in the transition towards implementation," Cr Kam concluded.
