ANZAC Service In TaiwanThis year, huge crowds flocked to ANZAC Day services as the importance of the day for Australians continues to grow. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 30th April 2009 - Back to News Bass Coast was no exception, with record numbers attending services around the Shire.
The significance of the day extends well beyond the borders of Australia and New Zealand. While the annual ceremony at Gallipoli is the most high profile of the international events, it is not the only ANZAC Day ceremony taking place on foreign soil.
Bass Coast Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden, took time out from visiting family whilst on holiday in Taiwan to pay his respects at an ANZAC Day Service in the country’s capital, Taipei.
Mr Bawden said the service was hosted by the Australian and New Zealand Trade Commissions and attended by about 60 people including Australian and New Zealand government officials, expatriots living and working in Taiwan and other visitors.
"Attendees included representatives of many other governments including Britain, United States, Turkey, Canada, Taiwan, Fiji, Nauru and India," said Mr Bawden.
"The service was similar to that observed in Australia, but had a distinctly international feel.
"It was pouring rain in Taipei during the dawn service, but that didn’t seem to dampen anyone’s enthusiasm for the commemoration.
"Mr Muzaffer Eroktem, representing the Turkish Government, read a special tribute to the ANZACs.
"It was really fantastic to see how widely the emotion of ANZAC Day is felt," said Mr Bawden.
