By Latrobe City Council - 22nd August 2003 - Back to News

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said that the program, organised by Latrobe City Youth Services in conjunction with Latrobe Regional Hospital, Department of Education, Science and Training and the Gippsland Area Consultative Committee, was well received by both students and careers’ teachers from local secondary colleges.

"The students were able visit various displays by different hospital areas such as pharmacy, nursing, allied health, ambulance, administration, medical and catering," Cr Middlemiss explained.

"Hospital staff also took part in a scenario exploring an accident situation and discussed how each department would deal with the presenting patient," Cr Middlemiss said.

"Information was also provided by Monash University’s Rural Health Department on useful websites for students to access," Cr Middlemiss continued.

"The Look Local Career Program provides the young people of Latrobe City the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and understanding of local career opportunities, and gives them an insight into the range of career choices within a particular industry," Cr Middlemiss said.

Latrobe Regional Hospital’s Chief Executive Felix Pintado said that it was important that young people were encouraged to seek information about their career options as they embarked on their VCE program.

"The workshop offered a real insight into the health industry, outlining the many jobs and career paths open for young people who are considering health as a their chosen field. Hospital staff were on hand to help guide students to make appropriate subject choices as they prepare for VCE and further education," Mr Pintado concluded.
