Alpine National Park (Editorial)

The propaganda from the Bracks Government and its supporters would have you believe that cattle are everywhere in the high country

By Peter Hall - 25th June 2005 - Back to News

The reality is that if you visit the Alpine National Park you are lucky if you can find any cattle or indeed notice where they have been. The park is 660,000 hectares in size and cattle graze in just 15% of the total park area. There is room for all in Victoria’s high country.

Ski fields have been created, vast areas of wilderness and parks have been set aside and an icon Australian tradition could have been preserved in just a small area of that country. By all means, excise the grazed area from the park if this activity is considered incompatible to the term "national park".

Sadly it appears one of our few living heritage practices has now been consigned to the history books. All because some want it all their own way and are not prepared to compromise. The Bracks Government has again demonstrated it is prepared to sell out country Victorians for cheap city based green votes.
