Boost For Motorcyclist Safety In Latrobe Valley

Member for Morwell Russell Northe today announced that $298,000 will go towards improving safety for motorcyclists on Maryvale Road near Morwell, from funding under the TAC Motorcycle Safety Levy.

By Russell Northe - 16th July 2013 - Back to News

Mr Northe said studies of local motorcycle crashes have identified that the section of Maryvale Road near Maryvale Mill will benefit from increased road safety measures.

¡§Figures show that in a recent five year period there have been 4 recorded motorcycle crashes where someone was injured on the sharp bend just north of the mill access,¡¨ Mr Northe said.

¡§Maryvale Road is a popular road for the many locals who work at Maryvale Mill, and travel to and from the many surrounding communities to the north and west of Morwell¡¨ he said.

The road safety upgrades along this road include:

„h Improvements to signs, guideposts and line marking to give riders more visual cues so they can adjust their speed to better negotiate the road environment

„h Motorcycle barrier protection will be fitted to existing wire rope barriers to lessen the impact and severity if a rider does crash

„h Roadside vegetation will be trimmed or removed to improve sight distance and reduce roadside hazards

„h There will be minor trimming of the inside batter of the curve to improve sight distance

„h Road surface improvements to improve ride quality.

¡§This project is one of five across Gippsland that targets key sections of roads where motorcycle crashes are occurring and will provide road safety benefits for all road users,¡¨ Mr Northe said.

VicRoads Regional Director Sebastian Motta said investing in motorcyclist safety was particularly important across Gippsland region.

¡§Not only are there many local riders, but our fantastic tourism hot spots attract many riders from across the state¡¨, he said.

¡§The project at Maryvale aims to lessen both the risk and severity of crashes occurring, and is expected to start later this year¡¨.
