Kristy Olsen’s parents, Terry and Lorna Olsen, presented the winning trophy.

Despite continuous rain that fell persistently during the morning. Boolarra tied for second place with Flinders College on 586 points in the Latrobe City Bike Ed Challenge.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said that all three schools would go on to compete at the Regional Bike Ed challenge in October.

"Five schools, and eight teams, participated in the Latrobe City and all competitors showed great determination to continue to ride in the rain.

"As well as the top three places, there were a number of other awards and prizes up for grabs on the day. Lachlan White of Morwell Park primary school won ‘Best Boy’ and Anna Kiriakidis of Flinders College won ‘Best Girl’. Bicycle Victoria also presented five encouragement awards to riders who participated with great spirit during the competition. Latrobe City Council donated two bikes which were won by Boolarra and St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School," Cr O’Callaghan said.

International Power Traffic School committee member, John Hehir, explained that students throughout the day participated in a range of road safety related challenges.

"These included demonstrating the correct way to signal a turn, how to safely enter and exit a roundabout, correct procedures at pedestrian crossings and traffic lights, and a host of other bicycle safety essentials. In the rain this year, the riding conditions were very challenging, so we congratulate the tenacity of the young cyclists," Mr Hehir said.

Cr O’Callaghan added that the Bike Ed Challenge, which is jointly organised with RoadSafe and VicRoads, encourages not only competent cycling but awareness of road safety from a young age.

"These young riders will no doubt have picked up some valuable skills that will set them in good stead for years to come," Cr O’Callaghan concluded.

The top three winning schools will join Eagle Point, Swan Reach, Cowes and Powlett River the regional challenge to be held on 21 October, along with the winners from the South Gippsland, Wellington and Baw Baw shire challenges.
