Councillors Encourage Community To Have Say On Coastal Strategy

Bass Coast Shire Councillors are encouraging the community to share their views on changes to the township boundaries of Cape Paterson, Grantville and Pioneer Bay.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 10th February 2006 - Back to News

Extensions to the township boundaries were made last year by the previous Council as part of its Strategic Coastal Planning Framework.

Shire Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin, encouraged everyone in the community to take an interest in where the Shire was going.

"These planning frameworks impact everyone that lives and works in, and visits, our beautiful Shire.

"Whether you support or oppose the changes, you can tell the Council your views simply by writing to us," asserted Cr Goodwin.

Cr John Duscher said community feedback was vital to the decision making process.

"It’s very important that people come forward to express their opinions, otherwise we have to base our decision on a limited view.

"I encourage and applaud the people of Bass Coast Shire to have their say," said Cr Duscher.

Cr Veronica Dowman said the Coastal Framework was completed in December 2004 after a period of thorough strategic study and wide community consultation.

"In February 2005, the former Council endorsed the Framework but made significant changes to the township boundaries recommended for Pioneer Bay, Grantville and Cape Paterson.

"Now in 2006, the Bass Coast community has the opportunity to comment on their preferred positioning of the three township boundaries – taking into account the Victorian Coastal Strategy, which is designed to protect our coast, and the lifestyle they, as residents, value," informed Ms Dowman.

The newly appointed Council recently announced their reconsideration of these township boundary changes, to allow for community comment.

Under consideration are the following boundary changes:

  • An extension of the township boundary of Cape Paterson to the west to Wilsons Road;
  • An extension of the township boundary of Grantville to the south west to include land between the Bass Highway to Queensferry Jetty Road; and
  • An extension of the township boundary of Pioneer Bay to the south to include land at 1200 Bass Highway.

Comments must be made in writing by the end of next week and should be addressed to the Director of Planning and Environment, Bass Coast Shire Council, PO Box 118, Wonthaggi, 3995.

Once submissions have been lodged, a report will be prepared by Council officers for further consideration by Council. Please note that submissions may be made available to the public.
