Kids invited to get rapt in reading this winter and win prizes along the wayLocal schoolchildren have the chance to read some great books and win prizes along the way by joining the Winter Reading Club being run by the Wellington Shire Council library service again this year. By Wellington Shire Council - 10th June 2003 - Back to News Local schoolchildren have the chance to read some great books and win prizes along the way by joining the Winter Reading Club being run by the Wellington Shire Council library service again this year.
The Club is free to join and encourages kids to snuggle up with ten books of their choice between 16th June and 26th July. After five books they will receive a sticker and bookmark. Those reading all ten will also receive a participation certificate and small surprise, as well as going into a prize draw offering the chance to win a $15 book voucher donated by Collins Books in Sale.
In addition there will be reading club sessions at local libraries during the school holidays, with stories and craft activities for all.
Children who would like to join the club can do so by popping along to any Wellington Shire library, where they will be given a reading sheet to record the books they read, plus a fun activity sheet.
Said Wellington’s Mayor John Jago, "Book programmes like this are a great way to get kids hooked on reading.
"There’s been a lot of talk in recent years about the decline of reading and the overpowering influence of television and video games. In spite of this, reading is still one of the best ways of promoting and nurturing creativity and ideas.
"Books for children do the same as they do for adults: they inform, they stimulate, delight and amuse, by transporting us into other worlds of thought and experience."
