FReeZA program hotting up

Wellington Shire Council is asking local organisations to register their interest in delivering the 2006 FReeZA program or partnering Council in the venture.

By Wellington Shire Council - 30th September 2005 - Back to News

FReeZA is a State Government initiative that enables young people to get involved in community life by leading the planning, development and delivery of musical and cultural events in their locality.

This is achieved through a network of youth committees across Victoria implementing a series of drug and alcohol-free events, which are run throughout the year for youth aged 12-25.

The FReeZA grant provides funding to cover costs associated with a holding the youth events including security, transport, hall hire and entertainment costs. The grant also ensures a lower ticket price can be maintained, making FReeZA events both accessible and affordable.

Wellington Shire Council has supported the FReeZA program for the past six years and is currently calling on other community groups and organisations to take an active role in supporting the program.

Interested groups should register with Council this week as the application process closes on the 14th October. Council will assist in preparing the application and will continue to auspice the program if required.

Wellington Shire Youth Development Officer David Roberts currently supports the local Sale and Maffra youth committees.

Mr Roberts said: "The FReeZA program is a great chance for young people to get involved in their local community and it provides opportunities for youth leadership, work experience and skill development in the entertainment and contemporary music industries.

"This year, it has also been great to have a new FReeZA program funded in Yarram through the initiative of the Yarram Youth Group Inc.

"More community support is needed and we look forward to talking with any groups interested in being involved."

An information session will be held in Morwell on the 5th October at 2pm, conducted by the representatives from the Victorian Government Department of Victorian Communities.

To register your interest or for further questions please contact David Roberts on 1300 366 244.
