Churchill Development Flyer Misleading Says Council

Latrobe City Council has taken issue over a flyer being circulated to Churchill residents by a developer seeking community support for his proposals.

By Latrobe City Council - 9th February 2007 - Back to News

According to Latrobe City’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, the flyer attempts to sway residents’ opinions by painting current infrastructure in a poor light and inferring council ownership of existing infrastructure.

"We take objection to claims that a sub-standard road currently services what is claimed by the developer to be an outdated shopping centre. Maintenance of the road identified by the developer as ‘sub-standard’ is in fact the responsibility of the body corporate. The community should be aware that if the developer considers the road to be substandard, then as part of the ‘body corporate’ in this case, he should look no further than himself for any neglect of his own infrastructure.

"Of most concern to council is an assumption being promoted by the developer in the flyer that council will own the car park associated with his proposal. It needs to be stressed that no agreement has been considered by council in relation to this matter. To suggest council ownership of such a proposed facility is highly speculative and totally misleading," Mr Buckley said.

"Churchill residents will be very aware that there is considerable rivalry between competing commercial development proposals in the town. It is the responsibility of each of the developers to ensure that their proposals are projected accurately and transparently to residents, notwithstanding rivalry, in the interest of sustainable and beneficial outcomes being put into place for residents and the community at large.

"To ensure the Churchill community is empowered to the best possible extent, the Churchill and District Community Association have requested council to call a public meeting where residents will be able to find out first hand what the proposed developments entail. Latrobe City has consequently called a public meeting for Wednesday 14 February at 6pm at the Churchill Football and Netball Club, Gaskin, Park Churchill.

"Invitations have been sent to all developers with proposals for the Churchill Shopping Centre to attend the meeting and present their proposals to the local community," My Buckley concluded.
