Walhalla, Mountain Rivers Tourism Operators upbeat plan marketing push into MelbourneWalhalla, Mountain Rivers Tourism Operators upbeat plan marketing push into Melbourne By Baw Baw Shire Council - 18th April 2006 - Back to News Tourism operators from the Walhalla & Mountain Rivers District Tourism Association met with Mr Ian Maxfield Member for Narracan, the Gippsland Tourism Response & Recovery Group, representatives from Baw Baw Shire and Latrobe City and Gippsland Tourism at the Crater Lake Reserve today to discuss the way forward for local tourism operators.
The mood of the meeting was upbeat as speakers gave the latest update on progress with the recovery process.
Mr Chris Buckingham, Gippsland Tourism and Chairperson Destination Gippsland said: ‘Maintaining a collective and positive approach is essential. It is really important that business, community and government continue to work together to speed up the recovery process.’
There was a strong focus on marketing activities in the meeting and Mr Michael Leaney President of the Walhalla, Mountain Rivers and District Tourism Association outlined initial plans for the marketing campaign that will be directly targeting the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
He said: ‘We have an opportunity to build tourism in what is traditionally our quietest time. There will be a strong focus on marketing the key attractions in Walhalla, the Mountain Rivers District as well as Moe and Mt Baw Baw.’
Mr Ian Maxfield, Member for Narracan said: ‘It is great to be working with such a positive group of people after all this community has been through.’
There was a sense at the meeting that despite the challenges the fire had caused for the region, the communities directly affected by the fire were stronger and more united.
It was recognised that for the campaign to work it had to have local ownership, but be supported by State and Local Governments, Destination Gippsland and Industry.
Mr Patterson concluded: ‘The Walhalla & Mountain Rivers Tourism Association is showing leadership in their community and we are delighted to be working in partnership with them to get this very special part of Gippsland back on the map.’
