By - 15th March 2004 - Back to News

Effective as of February 2004, all people who work on Victorian construction sites are required to have undertaken the basic Occupational Health and Safety Industry Induction Training (Red Card).

This training requirement applies to all people who work or participate on any sector of the Victorian construction industry – housing, commercial, civil and engineering.

The training initiative is a result of a Foundations for Safety industry agreement endorsed by WorkSafe, the Office of the Chief Electrical Inspector, employer associations and unions.

The initiative is aimed at providing all those who require access to a construction site with a basic awareness and understanding of the hazards and risks common to the industry. To reduce and improve:

  • the construction industry’s incidence of deaths, injuries and diseases and
  • the level of compliance by employers’ with OHS requirements on Victorian construction sites.

INDUCTION TRAINING DETAILS

The training course covers 5 key areas common to all sectors of the construction industry: The Legislative Framework; Hazards; Construction Industry Knowledge; Accidents and Incidents and Site Safety.

As at February 2004, 16 Foundation for Safety member organisations, all who have signed the agreement, are participating in the Foundations for Safety Induction Scheme. They all use Registered Training Organisations for training delivery, and they all issue proof of training cards (bearing the Foundation for Safety logo).

NMTC Pty Ltd is currently delivering the Construction Industry Basic Occupational Health and Safety Induction (RED CARD) Training Course on behalf of the Electrical Trades Union – Southern States Branch and in partnership with ETTA (Energy and Telecommunications Training Australia, Chadstone).
