Callignee Ablution Block Flushed With Success

Latrobe City Council has coordinated the instalment of an ablution block in Callignee to support residents working in and around fire affected properties.

By Latrobe City - 30th March 2009 - Back to News

Manager, municipal recovery, Steve Tong, said that the ablution block was installed to assist residents who are returning to their property for clean up and recovery activities.

"Residents were returning to their properties to work on site during the day with no access to facilities.

"The community indicated that shower and toilet facilities were needed, from not only a public health perspective, but because much of the work they are doing is dirty work and many of them are at their properties for extended periods of time.

"Residents have been accessing a single public convenience in Callignee and it was obvious that this facility just wasn’t up to the job."

Mr Tong said that the block was also providing longer term support to temporary accommodation.

"There are a number of residents who have chosen to live in temporary accommodation on their property and some of this accommodation is without bathroom facilities.

"Our work is further supporting the efforts of the Department of Human Services which has made a number of caravans available to residents who have lost their homes.

"In addition to this, there are residents who have returned to homes which are still liveable, but have lost their sewage systems or connections.

Mr Tong said that the ablution block also provides residents with access to washing machines.

"We’re very much putting temporary measures in place – measures which will in some way put back part of the normal weekly household routine and unfortunately for all of us that means doing the washing.

"It’s a bit of a bitter sweet moment, no one likes doing the laundry but sadly it’s one of the key realities of life – and it is those realities – pleasant or not, that we need to restore to these communities."
