New Seating Shines At Morwell Sports Stadium

The new seating at the Morwell Sports Stadium was recently inspected by Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Bruce Lougheed and member for Morwell, Brendan Jenkins MP.

The seating is part of the refurbishment and upgrade currently being undertaken at the Morwell Leisure Centre.

Councillor Lougheed said that the permanent six-tier seating stand is an indication of work well underway on the venue. "It will provide a much-needed facility for spectators to watch games on the show court," Cr Lougheed said.

Cr Lougheed explained that the spectator area had been refurbished after the previously existing seating was removed for safety reasons several years ago. "I think that the new seating is fantastic, you can really imagine the crowds cheering on the competitors from up here," Cr Lougheed said.

"The new seating is just part of the upgrade of the venue which will ultimately create a better facility for sports participants as well as spectators.

"The refurbished stadium will not only benefit the basketball players and other sports groups who use the resource, but is part of the transformation of the whole leisure centre into a top quality sporting and aquatic facility. The transformed centre has the potential to attract many new visitors to the area for matches, competitions and tournaments," Cr Lougheed said.

Cr Lougheed said that work had already been completed on the aquatic facility during a short period when the pool and spa were closed for upgrade and maintenance earlier in the year. "Together with the replacement of backboards in Courts Two and Three – the refurbishment is coming along well," Cr Lougheed said.

"Tenders are currently being considered for the balustrade system in the spectator area and tenders will soon be called for the refurbishment of the meeting area and office," Cr Lougheed added.

Member for Morwell, Brendan Jenkins MP, said that the state government funding together with that from council was ensuring that the facility was given a new lease of life that would serve the community for many years.

"By increasing the longevity of the venue through maintenance and upgrades, it will ensure that patrons can continue to access this top quality sporting and aquatic centre, encouraging healthy lifestyles in our community," Mr Jenkins said.
