Town Entrance Project Begins

Bass Coast Shire Council will begin works on the $3.8 million Wonthaggi town entrance project next week.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 1st July 2009 - Back to News

Council Infrastructure Director, Steve Piasente, said the works involve constructing service lanes, stopping lanes and will cater for the increase in heavy vehicles using the roads for the desalination plant.

"The Victorian Government announced in April that they would contribute to the scheme after some intense lobbying by Council," explained Mr Piasente.

"The desalination project has increased the works involved in the town entrance project, requiring a much larger intersection to be constructed at Lower Powlett Road.

"We always maintained that the government’s contribution to the scheme should be greater and are pleased that we have been able to reduce the amount landowners are contributing to the project by about 19 per cent.

"Landowners original contribution was to be over $1.1 million, that figure is now down to $918,000," said Mr Piasente.

Council notified all residents and landowners in writing of changes to their contribution to the special charge scheme.

"It’s a real milestone to see works begin and we’re looking forward to seeing the safety and appearance of the Dalyston entrance into Wonthaggi improved," said Mr Piasente.

"Our contractors will keep any disruption to residents to an absoloute minimum and have notified them of the work they are doing.

"It’s important for residents to know that South Gippsland Water will also be working in the area laying pipes, but we are working together to ensure that residents are not inconvenienced," explained Mr Piasente.

The White Road Special Charge Scheme is a two stage project, with the intersection due to be completed by 30 September and the rest of the works completed by end of December 2009.
