Latrobe Valley from Wednesday 15 June to Sunday 19 June hosted by the Latrobe Regional Gallery.Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrell White welcomed the monk’s return again this year.

"We feel very fortunate to have the monks visit the region once again. They are committed and faithful Buddhist monks from Tibet and Latrobe City Council is proud to be showcasing the creative process of the ancient mandala, and to be hosting once again this extremely popular event.

"The support from local business has been amazing with accommodation for the monks being provided by Econo Lodge, Morwell, and meals from Terrace Café, So Swish Café, Silvers Restaurant, Out of India and Soularity. This year Maryvale Crescent Preschool Morwell, has invited the monks to share lunch and some activities with the children, which is a wonderful gesture by the preschool, Cr White said.

Latrobe City Council’s arts director, Julie Adams explained some of the activities that the monks would undertake during their visit.

"During the 5 day program the monks will produce a mandala, a floor sand painting that celebrates the life and achievements of Buddha and Tibetan culture. The mandala is a representation of an enlightened being’s place of residence and everything that is contained within it. Tibetan monks travel around the world creating these stunning works to celebrate their spiritual wellbeing and to cleanse the ground on which they travel.

"Other activities will include an evening talk with Geshe Thargye on Thursday evening, a guided meditation session on both Saturday and Sunday morning, and school group visits," Ms Adams said.

"The Sacred Footsteps from the Roof of the World Australian Tour 2011 program begins with a brief welcome ceremony on Wednesday, 15 June at 9am which will be followed by morning meditation with the monks.

"The traditional dissolution ceremony will be held on Sunday 19 June from 2pm. During the ceremony the mandala will be swept up as a mark of the impermanence of all things, a central tenet of Buddhist belief," Ms Adams concluded.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery has special opening hours for the tour opening from 9am each morning. Admission is free for the general program.
