Coronet Bay Goes Plastic Bag Free

From 10am on Saturday, 18 November, the Coronet Bay General Store will begin a Plastic Bag Free Challenge.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 30th October 2006 - Back to News

The Store is urging shoppers to help make Coronet Bay plastic bag free by taking a reusable bag with them whenever they go shopping.

Those requiring plastic bags will be charged 10 cents per bag, the proceeds of which will be donated to the Corinella CFA.

The first 50 customers to spend over $30 on the launch day will receive a free reusable bag.

The Store stocks a range of reusable bags, including bags that support the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Bass Coast Shire Councillor, Veronica Dowman, said 20 million Australians currently use around five billion plastic check-out bags every year.

"Plastic bag litter creates many problems. Bags end up blocking drains and trapping birds and kill livestock when eaten.

"In the marine environment, plastic bag litter is lethal, killing thousands of whales, turtles and other sea life every year," informed Cr Dowman.

"And although we use a plastic shopping bag for only a few minutes, it takes them up to 1,000 years to break down.

"The staff at the Coronet Bay General Store are to be congratulated for their efforts in helping to eradicate plastic bag use.

"Eliminating plastic bag usage and encouraging the use of reusable bags will help to reduce the flow-on effects on landfill sites, raw materials, energy use and greenhouse gas emissions," Cr Dowman continued.

The Coronet Bay Plastic Bag Free Challenge is proudly supported by Sustainability Victoria and Bass Coast Shire Council.
