A Directory To Connect Communities

Council is calling on the community to help make the 2009 Community Directory bigger and better than last year.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 19th September 2008 - Back to News

Council’s Corporate Services Director, Danny Luna, said the Directory was an important community resource that people relied upon for information.

"Council wants community groups to include their listing in the Directory," said Mr Luna.

"We are also reminding community members that they need to put their details on the mailing list to receive a copy."

This is the second year the new Community Directory format will be published. The Directory replaces the old Information Booklet and includes a full community directory listing, previously only available on Council’s website,

As well as the community directory listing, the Directory includes up-to-date town maps.

"This sort of resource helps to tie the community together," Mr Luna said.

"It gets communities connected and informed, while promoting local services and events."

Organisations already listed in the 2008 Community Directory will be automatically included in next year’s edition. They will be receiving letters shortly to encourage them to update any details that may have changed from last year.

"There is no point having a Community Directory if information is not current and up-to-date," Mr Luna said.

"A lot can change in one year, especially contact details, so we really rely on people within these organisations to let us know of any changes."

It is also important for any new organisations to register their details to ensure they are listed in the 2009 edition. Registration forms are available at Council’s Customer Service Centres.

A listing in the new directory will include contact details for community groups. There will also be the option for groups to give a 25 word description of what they do.

"I’d really urge groups to get a form, fill it in and return it to us by 8 October," said Mr Luna.

"Your group will be listed on our website at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au and will be part of the printed directory.

"You can also ask for copies of the directory to distribute to your members."

The 2009 Community Directory will be available through a number of outlets including Council’s Customer Service and Visitor Information centres, leisure centres, libraries and general stores. Copies will also be mailed out to those on the 2009 Community Directory mailing list.

"It’s really important that people realise just because they received the 2008 Community Directory in the mail this year, does not mean they will automatically receive the next edition," Mr Luna said.

"Residents and community organisations need to re-register on the mailing list by filling in the specially marked forms."

These forms are available at Council’s Customer Service Centres or by contacting Communications Officer, Tracy VanderZalm on 5671 2703 or email t.vanderzalm@basscoast.vic.gov.au. Forms must be returned by Wednesday 8 October.
