Bridge rehabilitation underway on Mackeys Road Two sections of Mackeys Road in Hazelwood South are a step closer to being reunited following the laying of the structural steel support beams last Friday for the rehabilitated bridge across Bennetts Creek. By Latrobe City Council - 10th December 2003 - Back to News The existing timber decked bridge was deemed unsuitable for the current vehicular traffic, has been removed and is being completely rebuilt, strengthened with additional steel beams and a cast insitu reinforced concrete bridge deck.
Latrobe City’s Construction Engineer Infrastructure Maintenance, Richard Brammall, said the existing timber bridge deck was in poor condition and required replacement, and it was decided the upgrade should occur at the same time.
"Mackeys Road Bridge was closed because it was not practicable to construct a side track within the road reserve. A number of mature eucalypts growing on the stream banks adjacent to the bridge would have needed to be removed to construct a side track," Mr Brammall explained.
"A temporary bridge was however installed downstream of the bridge, to enable a local farmer with pasture on both sides of the creek to maintain his dairying business. The contractor was innovative and used a twelve-metre long container base to construct an ‘instant’ bridge instead of installing a culvert. The use of a temporary bridge of this type has preserved the stream environs," Mr Brammall said.
Mr Brammall said that the existing steel beams had been abrasively blasted and then painted with a zinc-in-silicate primer before being reinstalled together with additional beams.
"Preparations are now being made for pouring the cast insitu reinforced concrete bridge deck, and following a four-week curing process, steel barrier railings and steel beam guard fences on the bridge approaches will be installed," Mr Brammall said.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, thanked residents of Mackeys Road, Farrans Road and Sunnyview Road for their cooperation and understanding while the refurbishment took place.
"There are bound to be inconveniences experienced in having to detour in such circumstances and we thank those affected for their patience. The rehabilitated bridge will provide access for modern vehicles and as such we feel sure this will ultimately benefit the local community," Cr Middlemiss said.
The City’s contractor DN McInnes Pty Ltd is currently carrying out the bridge rehabilitation works. The works are being funded from the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery Program. The rehabilitated bridge is expected to be reopened in February 2004.
